Ashina Outskirts is the first proper play area of the game, accessed from the Dilapidated Temple. It is a winding road of cliffside villages, abandoned checkpoints, and bombed-out fortifications that climbs from the valley floor up to the great gate of Ashina Castle. The Ministry's siege has begun in earnest: most of the soldiers patrolling the road wear the broad straw hats and red sashes of Ashina troops, but artillery, scattered corpses, and burned wagons make it clear the defense has been overrun in places.
The Chained Ogre is a mini-boss encountered partway up the road of Ashina Outskirts, restrained at the top of a stone staircase by two priests holding spiked rods to his neck. Killing the priests first is the recommended approach: doing so lets the player skip his throw-heavy opening phase by initiating a stealth Deathblow on him while he is still pinned.
Kusabimaru is Wolf's katana and his only sword for the entire game — Sekiro has no weapon-swapping system the way other FromSoftware titles do. The blade was a gift from Kuro and is recovered by Wolf at the Dilapidated Temple after the prologue. Its name translates roughly to "wedge" or "linchpin," reflecting Kuro's intent that it bind Wolf to his service.
At the conclusion of the prologue, Genichiro severs Wolf's left arm at the elbow and leaves him for dead. Wolf regains consciousness in the Dilapidated Temple, a half-ruined sanctuary on a hillside outside Ashina Castle. He is now fitted with a strange wooden left arm — the Shinobi Prosthetic — by the Sculptor, a one-armed monk who maintains a workshop full of Buddha carvings inside the temple. Emma, a doctor in service to the Ashina clan, is also present and explains that Wolf has been brought back by the power of the Dragon's Heritage flowing through his pledged bond with Kuro: the Resurrection mechanic the player will use throughout the game.
The opening sequence places Wolf — the player character, a shinobi sworn to the Divine Heir Kuro — at the bottom of a dry well in Ashina territory. After a brief tutorial pursuing intruders through a moonlit garden, Wolf reaches the upper floor of the tower where Kuro is held captive. The encounter with Genichiro Ashina that follows is the game's first scripted boss fight and is unwinnable on a first attempt; it functions primarily as a cinematic establishment of the antagonist's skill and the protagonist's place in the world.
The Shinobi Prosthetic is the wooden left arm that the Sculptor fits to Wolf after the prologue. It functions as a permanent equipment slot rather than a consumable, and it is the slot into which all Prosthetic Tools — Shuriken Wheel, Flame Vent, Loaded Axe, Loaded Spear, Loaded Umbrella, Mist Raven, Sabimaru, Divine Abduction, Finger Whistle, and others — are installed.
